Mike Wingo – “Pink Shoes”
Mike Wingo of Ada, Oklahoma believes he is in the perfect position to further awareness of the Sister Study. On two fronts. Not only is he Native American (Chickasaw Nation) and eager to encourage women in Indian Country to participate in this study, but he is also a Gear and Tent Crew member for the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk (benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a National Partner of the Sister Study). Mike assists in taking care of the walkers over this 3-day period, hauling thousands of pieces of luggage and putting up and taking down hundreds of tents over the course of the event. It was at this event in 2002 that Mike found his calling as a breast cancer awareness advocate. "It is a task that I hope will end soon, but I’m 'in it to win it' so I am not going anywhere until we can strike this disease from the face of this planet," Mike says.
Mike even wears Converse pink hi-top tennis shoes to call attention to his breast cancer advocacy!
Mike goes on to say, "Though I know men can also get this disease, it is still known as a woman's disease and I can't quite really KNOW what it is like to hear those words 'you have breast cancer.' It would be dishonest and disrespectful for me to say “I know how you feel. "Mike says he has been overwhelmed by the women he's met, and their openness and willingness to allow him to be a small part of their lives during the 3-Day event.
We proudly recognize Mike "Pink Shoes" Wingo for taking up the Sister Study as his new cause, dedicating himself to telling more and more women about the study and urging them to enroll.
